Is it possible for someone to become a specialist in communication?
I don't know, but I've been trying hard to do that all my life.
From the University of Western Ontario I obtained an Honours B.A.
in Psychology, then completed an Honours B.A. and M.A. in English
at McMaster University. My master's thesis was an attempt to show
that psychology could be used to analyze writing style. At Rensselaer
Polytechnic Institute (Troy, NY) I have taken advanced studies in
Organizational Communication.
I am a member of the Society of Technical
Communication. I was selected by the Society of Management Accountants
and by the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians
and Technologists to design and teach their syllabus report writing
courses.
Since 1980 I have maintained a private
practice as a writing and human relations consultant, with a wide
practice of writing training for federal, provincial, regional and
municipal government staff. I have been a Report Writing trainer
for the Ontario Municipal Management Institute since 1988. Numerous
Hamilton-area firms call on my writing services to produce their
training manuals and other corporate documents. Because of my interest
in human relations, I have published numerous articles in journals
and have been a frequent after-dinner speaker.
I find people fascinating and my career
provides me with a wealth of "stories" to illustrate many points
with humour. And we do use a language that requires a sense of the
ridiculous! Expect your staff to come back from my workshops with
a wider and wiser skill base in communication.
